Spicy food intensifies pain in your sore throat.

Some types of cancer treatments harm the fast-growing cells in your head, neck and throat. It may lead to inflammation and sore throat (called esophagitis). Besides having trouble swallowing, it often feels like there’s a lump in your throat and as if your throat and chest are burning.

These symptoms make it difficult to eat and are a main contributor to weight loss.
It may be a bitter pill, but it’s one you don’t just have to swallow. You can take steps to make it easier.

Here are some helpful hints for dealing with a sore throat

You should AVOID these things:

  • Tobacco and alcohol during the treatment
  • Hot food and drink
  • Spicy food
  • Hot sauce
  • Food and juice that are highly acidic, like tomatoes, oranges and lemonade

These SUGGESTIONS may be helpful:

  • Choose food that is soft and easy to chew and swallow.
  • Try scrambled eggs or milkshakes, for instance.
  • Cook food until it is soft and cut it into small pieces.
  • Moisten your foods with sauces or gravy.
  • Eat five or six small meals instead of three regular-sized meals.
  • Eat food that is rich in protein and high in calories to get the most out of eating.
  • Drink with a straw to make it easier to swallow.
  • Sit upright while eating.

Consult your doctor or dietician if you have trouble swallowing and feel as if you’re choking while eating or drinking. If you cannot manage your caloric intake properly, you may need to switch to a feeding tube; your healthcare team will discuss this option with you and take the necessary steps.

The above list may also help if you are suffering from sore mouth.
