Silver dressings for antimicrobial effect
Silver has a long and intriguing history as an antibiotic in human healthcare. In wound dressings silver is used in various forms. The rate of onset of antimicrobial efficacy of silver has been demonstrated within 30 minutes of contact with clinically relevant bacteria.
Silver dressings are available in different forms. The choice of dressing depends on the availability of the dressings in the clinical setting and of course on the needs of the wound and the patient, e.g. exudate level, wound depth, need for conformability, odor control, ease of removal and safety.
The Askina® Calgitrol range is available in two different forms. Askina® Calgitrol Ag has an absorbent foam layer while Askina® Calgitrol Paste is an amorphous silver alginate matrix in paste form.
Each type of Askina® Calgitrol is recommended for different wound characteristics.
Askina® Calgitrol Paste – conformable, not only for small tunnels and sinuses
Askina® Calgitrol AG – for flat superficial highly exuding wounds
