Success Story

First Virtual Set Consulting for Colombia

Between the 8th and 10th of February 2021, the first Virtual Set Consulting for Colombia took place from our center of excellence in Tuttlingen, Germany, to customers located in the Latin American country – live, in real-time, and virtually.
Equipped with modern cameras that allow detailed visualization of instruments and together with the customers, Mrs. Paula Betancourt (Biomedical Engineer) and Mr. Iván Dario Angulo (Surgical Instrumentalist), our experts reviewed and redefined the current set structure and content to meet the future needs in the OR of a new Hospital. This consultancy included the review of surgical sets from the specialist Neurosurgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery, and Otorhinolaryngology.

After the consultancy we asked our customer about their experience of the first Virtual Set Consulting by B. Braun.

Interview

The questions were asked by Lourdes Flores, Aesculap Set Consulting expert and responsible for this project.

Dear Mrs. Betancourt and Mr. Angulo, let me ask you, from where did the need for this Virtual Sets Consultancy come?

Paula Betancourt: We wanted to learn about a complete surgical set to offer our professionals and our specialists (surgeons) the best quality and, in this way, improve procedures that are provided at a national level accordingly to their complexity. Besides, we want to have the high-quality levels. Therefore, it is satisfactory that our supplier, in this case, B. Braun, has this type of response and this methodology for presenting the surgical instruments.

Iván Dario Angulo: As it is a bit frequent here in Colombia, specialists (surgeons) training is given in various regions of the country. As a result of that, depending on their education, the surgeons have slightly different working habits. Therefore, the main idea was to configure a "complete" surgical set in the best way possible. Thus, when specialists from different regions use the sets, these are complete, and no instruments are missing. We have the need for guidance about the configuration of surgical sets that fulfils the requirement of completeness.

What kind of problems does the Virtual Set Consultancy solve for you?

Iván Dario Angulo: We can be confident that the surgical sets will be complete and that surgical procedures can be performed with them appropriately.

Paula Betancourt: To complement what my colleague says, sometimes we are very used to a specific type of instruments. Through the consultancy, they standardize and advise us on which surgical instruments we should use to perform a particular procedure.

Before you have experienced this consultancy, what was your expectation or objective you want to achieve?

Iván Dario Angulo: That it was something similar, that the consultants were going to show us the equipment. Well, as I have already participated in several consultancies, I already had an idea of what the process was going to be. I didn't have a different vision because I had the chance to participate in a previous one.

Paula Betancourt: The expectation was to know a little more about the activity of the company. I was amazed by the methodology; even though it is virtual, the comprehensible method used for the presentation of their instruments was very gratifying.

Did you think the dynamic was good, did you like it, what did you dislike, what was your experience?

Iván Dario Angulo: I found it very interesting; I liked the fact that the cameras' images were clear. The consultants had cameras with close-ups through which I could see the details of instruments or objects more micro. I was wondering how the consultant will deal with the details of micro-instruments like scissors with small curved points.
But they had everything well prepared, and there was no need to tell them or make any observation because everything was well organized.

Paula Betancourt: The methodology was enjoyable and really efficient. Let's say the virtual set consulting was organized for a week. But, we did it in a shorter time. Some days we were able to finish it in less than the scheduled time because everything was so clear that we had no questions or doubts. Everything was explained clearly.

If you have a colleague tomorrow who is facing similar problems as you were facing, how would you describe the activity?

Iván Dario Angulo: I will tell them that you (B. Braun) have the surgical sets already organized, complete and with samples of the instruments. I will say that you have an excellent approach to visualization, that you handle the languages very well and are very clear in your presentation.
Sometimes in this kind of activities, the communication is not very good due to the language. This situation is something I was worried about how we will deal with the languages. But the communication was very clear during the consultancy.

Paula Betancourt: I will explain it by recommending this activity due to the applied methodology and the simple explanation that fills the gaps or illustrates everything one must know about this topic (configuration and content of surgical sets).
