Three products, five awards
Aesculap succeeds at the Red Dot Design Award 2020.
The B. Braun subsidiary Aesculap won five awards with three products at the "Red Dot Award: Product Design". The cornerstone for this recognition is a design philosophy that focuses more strongly on the user. This approach is expressed in the award-winning products, the OrthoPilot® Elite navigation system, the associated control unit Multitool and the new container system generation. In addition to the positive customer feedback, the growing number of design awards shows the success of the approach.
In 2018, the philosophy was expanded and firmly anchored in a uniform design language at Aesculap. Since then, all new product developments have carried this language within them. Aesculap thus underpins its design strategy and combines the development of products even more strongly with user-oriented design features. "We are very happy with the way our approach is evolving. Not only in the exchange with the users*, but now also with this public reward. For us, this still young design language is a milestone. It helps us to cooperate more closely with our customers at eye level. In addition, we are working on this with our employees and are building up competence in a targeted manner. In this way we are also strengthening our internal cooperation. This signature will characterize our future products. Even in modern medical engineering, design is a must-have and no longer a nice-to-have. We take this path together with our customers”, says Dr. Katrin Sternberg, Member of the Executive Board R&D & QRM Aesculap.
Winner Red Dot Award: Product Design 2020
Medical devices and technology: Container system, Multitool, OrthoPilot® Elite
Innovative Products: Multitool
Smart Products: OrthoPilot® Elite
The OrthoPilot® Elite navigation system assists the surgeon in the precise and reproducible patient-specific positioning of knee and hip prostheses. The modular system places the user in the center of an integrated system consisting of hardware, software, instruments and implants. Customer-specific system interaction options such as the innovative Multitool, gesture control or the integration of a wireless foot switch emphasize the user-centric design of the system.
The Multitool is a control unit of the OrthoPilot® Elite navigation system for orthopaedic knee surgery. It allows the digitization of bony references, planes, surfaces and their spatial orientation. This is ensured by a constant, optical tracking of the tool using a stereo infrared camera. The design of the Multitool is characterized by ergonomics, stability, durability, cleanability and precision. Overall, the Multitool minimizes the amount of required instruments and instrument changes, as well as interactions within the OR-team, thus streamlining the operative workflow and shortening operation time.
Sterile containers play a vital role in the sterile supply cycle of surgical instruments and therefore are crucial for infection control in the OR and subsequently for patient wellbeing. Focused on enhancing ergonomics and process optimization as well as economic viability the new container system as well as the new trays cover the tight requirements of a wide range of stakeholders: from OR to transport, cleaning, preparation in the central sterile supply department of the hospital, sterile storage until the use in the operation. The design is honed to enhance user friendliness, sterile integrity and overall process efficiency. Integrated handles, modular labelling and a smart opening mechanism ensure safe and quick handling on low noise levels.
Red Dot Design Award
The origins of the Red Dot Design Award date back to 1955. Its distinction, the Red Dot, is established internationally as one of the most sought-after quality marks for good design. From products, brand communication and creative projects to design concepts and prototypes, the Red Dot Award documents the most prominent trends worldwide. In order to assess the diversity in the field of design in a professional manner, the award breaks down into three competitions: the Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. This year, a digital award ceremony will take place during the Red Dot Design Week from 22 to 26 June 2020. Throughout the week, Red Dot offers an exciting programme via its social media channels.
